The ATEAM medical trial
ATEAM was a randomised controlled trial of Alexander technique lessons, exercise, and massage for chronic and recurrent back pain. It was concluded that "One to one lessons in the Alexander technique from registered teachers have long term benefits for patients with chronic back pain." Read the report in the BMJ, 19 August 2008.
Back pain? Stiff shoulders? Poor posture?
Our natural reaction to stress is 'fight or flight'. We contract our muscles in preparation to run or tussle with an opponent. While you may sometimes feel like punching your computer, it won't help you make that deadline. Neither will it make you feel good in yourself. All that tension may translate into aches and pains, or you may simply feel stiff and sluggish. You may notice you look hunched or stooped in photos, because your muscles haven't regained their natural tone. You may even find that in stressful situations you forget to breathe! If this sounds like you, contact me to find out more, or to book a half-price taster lesson.
Why take lessons in Alexander Technique?
Throughout our lives we accumulate muscular tension from mental as well as physical causes. This tension eventually leads to a variety of problems. For example, if you always cross your right leg over your left, your muscles have to work harder on one side to help you balance in that position. Over time they gradually change. Your habit has made your body different on one side and thus less efficient. In a lesson I help you recognise these problems, see how you've contributed to them, and help you take back control. Lessons are a mix of talking and gentle touch, during which you learn to change your responses.

Elise, Research Supervisor, said:
"I had struggled with back pain and neck and shoulder tension for decades. I tried various osteopaths, yoga, massage approaches, but they did little to address my problems in the long-term. I was left feeling rather hopeless about my prospects of changing this until I had lessons with Kate on the Alexander Technique. These lessons have enabled me to recognise how I was holding and moving my body in ways that were causing tension and strain. Her keen awareness of my patterns was extremely useful in enabling me to transform them in an easy way, with minimal effort. While I still have some ways to go, I can say that I probably feel about 75% less tension and pain in my back, neck and shoulders. My sitting, walking, running, cycling, gardening and even my time in the kitchen are characterised by much greater ease and efficiency. I couldn't recommend the lessons enough."
